Last night, while we were doing the fast songs in groups, I found myself in the same place I usually find myself when we do these things...
I have no skill when it comes to transitioning from one move to another. I have some difficulty in slow songs, but not nearly as bad as when we're moving faster and I find myself in one move and know the next one I want to do but am going, "How the heck do I get out of this?"
Does this just come with time or are there some obvious things I can do to get out of repeating the same move 50 times?! :)
Also, do you ever stop feeling awkward? On some things i get so caught up in posture, etc that dancing feels awkward. I'm assuming this has got to be a time thing. And probably a practice thing?
Help!

Re: Help! I'm retarded with transitions
Wed, October 31, 2007 - 7:10 AMUm, yeah... hate to say it, but practice and repetition. This was (and is) tough for me too.
It helps to think of moves that flow well together, in terms of hip movement, arm placement, etc. In practice, make a list of three or four of those moves, put on some music and just practice transitioning between them. Then think of three or four different moves, and repeat.
Of course when you're up there cueing you'll forget all of it, ha ha ha, but with time it'll get easier. Your recall will improve and you'll get some go-to moves that you can easily get into and out of.
Another thing to remember is that you don't have to rush through things and jump from one move to the next like a wee frantic bunny. It's just fine to repeat a move a few times while you think of what to do next, and to buy yourself some time you can take a lot of moves into a circle. And then when you have a plan of action, be deliberate in broadcasting your transition. Does that make sense? Avoid doing anything suddenly - people behind you can generally catch what you're doing and follow along if you do it slow enough.
If the move the you want to do next doesn't flow well, it's also OK take some time to move to where you need to be to cue the next move. For example, if your arms are at your sides and the next move you want to do starts with arms up (like Egyptian basic), take 4 or 8 counts to move your arms up, while you continue to hip-up or Arabic or whatever.
It does get better, I promise. Not that long ago I hated to cue because I felt like my recall was horrible, I'd get stuck in a rut and forget 98% of what I knew. I think it STILL happens to a lot of us, it's no big deal.
Correct me if I'm wrong, Beez, but I think Robyn LOVES to cue, the little cue-hog, and it just took her a lot of time and repetition to get comfortable and start enjoying it.

Re: Help! I'm retarded with transitions
Wed, October 31, 2007 - 10:26 AMThanks, that's a lot of good info! (Heaves huge sigh of relief.)
I also got to thinking today that I wanted to make up something short for the holiday hafla katy is having at the school.
Then I remembered my lack of transitioning skills and started to rethink it. But now I'm thinking that thinking something out and choreographing it will be a hell of a lot easier than making up something on the spot.
Any other suggestions in addition to Mellie's are welcome too! Give me all the stuff you know! -

Re: Help! I'm retarded with transitions
Thu, November 1, 2007 - 10:58 AMYes and no!
Katy is having a Holiday Hafla at the school on December 18 (the last Tuesday before Christmas) and you can pretty much do whatever you want. Keep it to 5 minutes or less and just let her know a little ahead of time so there aren't 6 performances to 'Santa Baby' all in a row.
Everyone from dance class is invited and it's very low key. And that's really all the details there are!

Re: Help! I'm retarded with transitions
Wed, October 31, 2007 - 10:40 AMYes, it's true. LOVE to cue. You do not want me to take the cue; you will never get it back! But yeah, it took me lots of practice and the terror of cueing my first layered improv to feel this comfortable. EVERYONE has min-meltdown moments where they forget every move they've ever learned except for the one they're doing at that moment. You'll know I can't think of anything when you see me do hip ups into 4-point turns and then I bail.
Mellie's hit the nail on the head: practice moves that flow! That's why Katy has us do the group "pick a theme" exercise. But you don't have to just do all hip downs or Arabic moves because that's how you started. I agree with Mel's practice exercise: pick 3 or 4 moves that you're most comfortable with and then think about the basics of each. What are your arms doing? Are you facing straight forward or angled to the left? Is it a twist, hip up, shoulder, hip down, or Arabic move? Do your 3 or 4 moves have any of these qualities in common? If they do, it's going to be easier to link them together and obvious enough for the rest of your dancers to follow.
For example: the first moves I started to combine into smooth transitions were Casbah and Algerian Shimmy. I felt like a dance genius the first time I cued this. You finish Casbah with 4 hip downs while you're turning to face the front. All you have to do is move your arms down to your sides on that last 4 count, because you're already doing a hip down and facing straight forward, and then start the Algerian Shimmy 1. And then move into the rest of the Algerian Shimmy sequence if you wanna. The sequence ends with your body facing front, doing hip downs, and your arms up high. Your arms are already up and you're facing forward, so we usually go right into Egyptian Basic after this. But you don't HAVE to. It's just really easy.
And then once you've got it figured out, pick some other moves. The more you practice at it, the easier it will be to see which moves work and which ones don't. And you will develop your own Go-To Sequence that will become obvious the more you cue with the same group of people. Which is ok. Kind of awesome, really.
To agree with Melanie again, BE DELIBERATE. Don't panic and change from one move to another that's drastically different! A slow smooth transition is much easier to follow. And even if it's not the smoothest and not exactly on beat, just go with it anyway. If the cuer hesitates, then there's nothing for the rest of the dancers to follow. And that's a big ole awkward mess. Chances are, the rest of your dancers will be on beat even when you're not and sort of force you to adapt to the rhythm (at least this works in class where there's a mirror).
Cueing gives everyone lots to think about, so don't forget that more experienced dancers are trying not to cue moves that the rest of the group may not know. And it's difficult! :o)
Ok, end of ramble. And Amanda, you did great last night. Keep up whatever work you're doing and soon cueing will be a breeze.

Re: Help! I'm retarded with transitions
Wed, October 31, 2007 - 3:24 PMAnd always, always, always practice with good posture, strong arms and pretty hands. Believe me, it will become second nature and you will always look lovely. No sense learning all those moves and then looking like a goober with slouched sholders, dead arms and your butt sticking out!
