Hi everyone,
Katy has been really supportive of my idea to choreograph my own simple routine, for the "Holiday Hafla". In working up a routine, I strarted to get cold feet, and got discouraged as I strarted to fear being lauged at. The only times that I had ever danced for an audience, has been in "Jazz" or "Ballet". I wanted to create a "Bellydance" solo from a segment of a Madonna song. Katy had been supportive of the idea, but I realized that the particular song would be to difficult for me. I had changed my mind, but Katy sent me an encouraging e-mail. So, I have decided that I am going to use a one minute children's song, to keep with a holiday theme. The tempo of the song is slow, but I have been figuring out a way to simply incorporate some simple "bellydance" "hip-slides" and "Shoulder isolations" with some "Ballet" 2nd and 5th position plie's. I also have some very colorful and festive, but comfortable in mind to wear. I do kind of want people to laugh at me, but not in a derogitory way. I just want to do something creative and happy. I would like to hear some of your thoughts. See you in class.
Thank you,
Chris

Re: Do you think anyone would laugh at me?
Tue, November 27, 2007 - 8:24 AMtruth be told...
i'm in the same boat.
have performed a million times in a million other ways/venues and am nervous about dancing in front of people i dance in front of every week.
i think it's totally normal to be freaked out because you're putting yourself out there in a big way. however, no one will laugh at you!
i think that everyone has been there at some point or another and will completely understand that we're ALL nervous and excited and i think it will be a complete ego boost to do a great performance and have them cheer you on.
lately i've been trying to practice the "you only get one life" rule. you should totally do it because i think you'll be sorry you didn't in the long run.
hurrah! look forward to your dance! -

Tue, November 27, 2007 - 12:04 PMHi Amanda,
Thank you so much for the kind words and encouragement. I must remember that I am not doind this on "MTV", but just trying to be creative, and entertain when there is an opportunity available. I forget that everyone else is in the same boat, so I'll just go for it.
See you in class,

Re: Do you think anyone would laugh at me?
Thu, November 29, 2007 - 8:38 AMRight on! I think a students only hafla like this is the perfect way to start dipping into performance. Remember: it's just us! It's not a competition, just a good time. No laughing, just applause. I know I'm looking forward to seeing everyone's creativity.

Re: Do you think anyone would laugh at me?
Tue, November 27, 2007 - 11:23 AMIt sounds like you are really doing something different and original. I think it would be quite impressive. You are quite right that part of the audience would be critical of anything really "new" at all, but that is always true.
I learned something from doing volunteer work at nursing homes when I was younger: People never really regret the things they did. What they DO regret bitterly is the things they wanted to do, and never did.
As they say at Nike: "Just do it!' -

Re: Do you think anyone would laugh at me?
Tue, November 27, 2007 - 11:58 AMThank you for the positive encouragement. I am simply wanting to entertain and be artistic. I need to remember that I am not appearing on "American Idol". This is just a chance for me to show my moves to a small audience of fellow class mates.
