okay.
I get the differences between cabaret and ATS/TF/UT.... (I could probably add to that list forever) and why Cab lends itself more toward solo stuff and why Tribal looks so good in groups.
You all dance solo either at Andy's or other venues, so what are some things that make a good tribal solo?
Also, anyone dancing this weekend at Andy's? My husband announced yesterday, "I could use some Medeterranian food" and I suggested Andy's this weeked...

Re: advice on a good solo routine
Mon, November 12, 2007 - 1:11 PMSeems like most folks agree that Rachel Brice is THE premier tribal soloist, so maybe look at her videos for inspiration. Of course, she's "fusion" so keep that in mind too- some more traditional restaurant owners might not even recognize what she does as bellydance.
I really REALLY love Mira Betz; she's not tribal and not really cab... not sure what category she fits into, but she's an amazing dancer and beautiful to watch. Check out whatever videos of her are on YouTube.
Finally, check out Ansuya. She's mostly a cab dancer but calls herself "tribaret" and has a really fun style that I think makes for a good solo that doesn't scream CABARET! but still appeals to more traditional tastes.
So, are you thinking of busting out a solo at the hafla...? Or just thinking? : )

Re: advice on a good solo routine
Tue, November 13, 2007 - 5:32 AMWell...
I did volunteer for a solo at the hafla, however told Katy that I was more interested in a group endeavor. ;)
But then, I got all confident and signed myself up for a "talent" contest here at work. I signed up for the very last day to dance (12/7) hoping for
a) a miracle and i bust something out that looks good
b) courage
I have no problem with performing in front of large crowds, however, it's always been with something I was comfortable with and had done a long time. This bellydancing thing is still so new to me that when I think of doing this talent show thing I'm talking myself out of it. -

Re: advice on a good solo routine
Tue, November 13, 2007 - 6:07 AMAwww, you should do it!
Pick a song you like that's no longer than about 1:45 - 2:00 in length. You can fill that up easily and will be surprised by how quickly it goes by. Think of a vibe too- do you want slow and slinky, upbeat and funky, or something more traditional?
And I bet any one of us would be happy to help you put something together... don't let cold feet stop you.

Re: advice on a good solo routine
Tue, November 13, 2007 - 6:11 AMokay. i'm going to try...
i'm thinking that i'd like to do something more slow and slinky but don't want to be boring.
Any suggestions on music?
I have some stuff that I have downloaded on my own and Katy gave me a CD to practice with...
Looking at my music library though, a lot of stuff is around 3 minutes or more...
I may have to tap some of your brains for some suggestions. :)
Thanks for the vote of confidence! ! -

Re: advice on a good solo routine
Tue, November 13, 2007 - 6:21 AMOkay, how strange is this?
I opened up my iTunes here on my work computer...
a while back my girlfriend gave me the soundtrack to the movie 300 b/c she thought it might be good bd music..
i never listened to it...i should have listened to her!
most songs are short and good for the type of dance I'd like to do...
hmmmm... -

Re: advice on a good solo routine
Tue, November 13, 2007 - 11:33 AMI can send you a MIDI file of a piece that is exactly 2 minutes long. It was written for a skater's "short program." I don't know how to post anything on Tribe, but if you e-mail me at hal@musician.org, I'll reply with a MIDI file attachment. -

Re: advice on a good solo routine
Tue, November 13, 2007 - 1:16 PMAmanda, way to be brave! Keep in mind that just about anything you do will impress the hell out of the average person. That will hopefully keep you from getting way too nervous.
But you also don't want to be just average. I really think it comes to deciding your vibe, like Melanie suggested, and then finding a song that speaks to you...meaning it makes you want to dance every time you hear it.
And 2 minutes is just a suggestion (though it is ideal for your first solo performance) so if there's a song you really love that's actually 3 minutes, then it's ok to use that too. You can always make cuts in the music or let some of the slow intro/outro play before you come on stage or start moving.
Just remember that it's always better to leave your crowd wanting more than to bore them to tears.
