coin bra...necessary or unnecessary?

topic posted Mon, January 21, 2008 - 1:20 PM by  Amanda
Okay...I've been debating whether or not I should purchase a coin bra.

I've contemplated making one and then I nervous and think I should just buy...
However, since I perform like...oh never (okay, a little more than never) I'm also wondering is it worth it to make the investment, when at this point, I may only break it out like 3 times a year...

Thoughts?

Any suggestions on boob bling for the 2/9 performance?

Coin bras are fun and really complete the costume in a lot of ways. BUT, they are expensive, uncomfortable, and we do only break them out periodically.

I think you can absolutely get by with a sparkly choli, like a Banjara mirrored choli, or some other sort of cute top- Robyn has one that's a halter-style top in a fun fabric with a few coin accents that she says is much more comfortable and cheaper than a coin bra.

Honestly, the troupe has done a lot of gigs lately where we did not wear coin bras and opted for something else. So they're certainly not a necessity.

But that's just my opinion... anyone else have thoughts?

I would say not necessary. If you just want to buy one anyway, they are fun. I don't feel like my investment has been justified yet from buying mine, but it was a splurge. Actually, my husband bought it for me when I started performing at all ever (I don't even know if it fits right now; I guess I'd better check that out). I've always wanted to make one, but never been able to settle for a design I liked best. Maybe we should have a crafty get-together sometime. I'd even offer to host at my place perhaps. Everybody could bring their bits and pieces and whatever they are working on and share and help and discuss. I might have a necklace you can borrow if it works for you, but I really haven't thought about what I will wear.

I do have a mirrored embroidered top, too. I would say definitely don't buy one just for one two minute performance....that's just my opinion...unless you want to.....I'm sure you'll want to buy one eventually............

Okay, you guys just confirmed how I was feeling... I have a really great jade necklace I was going to wear so I have that covered...and I may pick up some bindis and bedazzle my face. :) Maybe if I can throw on enough crap elsewhere I can get away with my melodia twist top...

You can absolutely get away with a Melodia twist top, or any other cropped dance top for that matter. Cut up some fishnets or other fun tights to wear underneath - a cheap and easy way to make it look like you're changing your costume when you're really just rotating tights and hose! Add a fun necklace or two, maybe a brooch or pin on a pendant or stray earring to the front cleave, don't forget bracelets and earrings, and you're basically set.

Lots of folks have a go at making their own bra to minimize the expense before they start performing on a regular basis. There are lots of things you can do, tons of styles, and lots of advice on tribe, if that's something you want to do in the future. But you'll be fine with what you've got for next month's show.

The halter top I have is from Domba, but it was a discontinued style and on clearance when I got it. Pics of me wearing it at International Fest this summer are in this tribe's album. I think they have more in stock at regular price (I forget how expensive they were). Do a tribe search and check them out! It's really comfortable and I easily added a few embellishments to it from beads and coins I had laying around. If you're at all handy with a needle and thread, or a sewing machine, I think it would be pretty easy to make a pattern out of the top I have.

Mellie and I were just saying that a craft night is totally in order. I want to make a head band/head dress of some type.

Hi, I made my own coin bra quite successfully and MUCH cheaper than buying one online. The key is to NOT buy a bra and cut it up - you lose the structure and support and if you're bigger than a B cup that can be a problem. Instead, buy a "convertible" molded cup bra (I think mine is Lilyette brand). Convertible means the straps can be switched around to be halter style. The molded cup is more supportive, and shapes you and is strong enough to hold whatever you sew on (by hand): tribal coins, bits of fabric, jewelry, cowrie shells etc.

I do agree though - they're not the most comfortable things to wear, but they look great and my Mother always told me "suffer for beauty." :-)

If anyone is interested in more details about doing this (where to get tribal coins, cowrie shells with the holes in the back, etc., feel free to contact me. I don't sew, yet I managed to do this fairly well. Just don't look too closely at my sewing skills - ha!
