Hey everyone. Just wanted to let you know that Cherie Haas (one of the hottest ladies I know) of Dante’s Gypsy Circus is going to have a poi workshop. Isolations and Layering
class time: 12:30pm- 3:00pm

Ever feel as though your learning curve has reached a plateau? This workshop is a rousing motivational tool to enhance one’s personal practice. Mira will begin with a thorough breakdown of basic isolations and will gradually increase into multiple layering designed to bewilder the brain and electrify the body. Add spice to your dance, take a step to the next level, this workshop is an asset to any dancer. All levels welcome to the party!
class fee: $50 (by June 30th, $60 after)

Sunday, July 6th- Liz Strong Workshop
TURKISH ROMAN FUSION:
class time: 12:00noon- 2:30pm
The more you know, the more confidently you will express your unique voice. Expand your dance vocabulary, and explore the energizing 9/8 rhythm! Learn the dance in its true
form, and then fuse it to other dance elements. Turkish Rom dance is richly expressive and playful, passionate and fun. Students will dance the pure formto traditional music in 9/8 time signature. Then we will use non-traditional music to create a scintillating, original fusion choreography, drawing on the technique and knowledge of the folkloric form.

Please bring a notebook, and wear yoga pants, a simple hip sash and a comfortable top.
class fee: $50 (by June 30th, $60 after)

Sunday, July 6th- Zoe Jakes Workshop

Unleashing the inner spaz!!!!
class time: 3:00- 5:30pm
Fancy kicks, tight spins and those elusive concepts to take pops and locks to the next level by mixing the liquid smoothness of a snake with hits and stops that look almost inhuman. This workshop will focus on ways to perform with passionate expression while maintaining control and grace. These concepts will be fully broken down using short combinations as examples so the student is able to get a real understanding of the mechanisms behind them.

Zoe Jakes- Zoe is a proud member of the indigo which recently was on the road touring their
show Le Serpent Rouge. She has been touring with Bellydance Superstars since
the fall of 2005 and can be seen performing on their new Tribal Fusions DVD.
Combining talents with David Satori and Tommy Cappel to create Tribal
Derivations last spring, Zoe discovered she enjoyed creating music, and a new cd will be out may of 2008. When not with the Indigo, she tours with The Yard Dogs Road Show,
a cartoon circus sideshow of wacky dimension, and has been seen tearing it up
with the Extra Action Marching Band.
An innovative dancer, Zoe has been said to have her own unique take on Tribal
bellydance. She takes her influence from Art Nouveau, tango, Breakdance, and
Indian classical dance. Zoe was recently nominated for Zaghareets best
interpretive artist 2007. She loves unicorns and has never once doubted their
existence.

Liz Strong- Elizabeth Strong grew up in a tradition of dance and music. As a young girl she was inspired by the music and dancing of the Middle East, and Eastern Europe. Her amazingly emotional and personal style has captivated audiences in the Bay Area and abroad. Elizabeth believes that the heart is the source of dance and that dance is an expression of our relationship with life and culture. A life-long dancer, Elizabeth formally began studying and performing Middle Eastern dance in 1996 at the age of 18.

1 to 3 PM Ghawazee Improvisation Style: 2 hours $40 ($35 before May 4th)

The Ghawazee are Egyptian street and celebration dancers. Their dance will be taught in a tribal style cued format using Banat Mazin Ghawzee moves. Basic finger cymbals will be taught and are usually used in this style but can be eliminated by the dancer if needed. There will be a chance to try it all out at the evening hafla if you desire?

Anaya Gypsy will be performing to the music of Mayan Ruins at World Tai Chi Day festivities at Ault Park. Free admission!

Activities last from 11:00 - 2:00 on Saturday, but I have no more details as to when and where specifically we'll be dancing or for how long.

Athletes from Blue Ash Shaolin-Do will also be there demonstrating their Tai Chi skills.

Expect sword, zills, and nothing but Improv! Anyone coming?

Hi!

Found some pretty fake Gerbera daisy clips at Michael's yesterday.
They have a variety of colors are are hanging on the endcaps of certain aisles (I got mine at the Tylersville location).

The clips are a little scary (like industrial strength) but they certainly saved my fingertips from an evening with the glue gun. And, they're only .99!

What do you want to learn?

If you could take any classes, or if your regular classes could have a focus, what would it be?

I want to learn more poi tricks...or learn how to properly do the ones I 'know.'
I really want to take some kind of classical Indian dance.
I love dancing dunyavi with big skirts...so excited that a new piece is on the horizon for AG!
Completely bummed that we're not going to Spirit this year since it means I'll be missing a floorwork workshop with Troupe Binti. I'm feeling a real figure 8 layback repeat rut in floorwork lately. And Troupe Binti is totally bitchin.

I am considering buying a new belly dance DVD but have learned from past experience that they're not all that great...

I most recently Netflixed (yes, i can be a verb) ;) a Suhaila DVD and it was awful. I was looking around Amazon at the Rachel Brice arms DVD and also stumbled upon one called, "Pop, Lock and Shimmy" and "Contemporary Bellydance with Ariellah."

Okay, I know Tiffany has a couple and maybe Mellie, probably Robyn? Anyway, I know I have asked Tiffany before, and she made hers. Is everyone so crafty?!? just wanted to say everyone did a great job last saturday. :)

my parents and husband were there and they all enjoyed the performances too!

although my husband admitted having a hard time looking at everyone since they were all "half naked." He said that it looked like certain people were looking at him but he didn't know if he should return the eye contact because he didn't want them to think he was staring at them...you know all those boobs and bellies. :) hahaha always the gentleman. ;)

I'm getting a little nervous about today...

I'm mostly just bummed because the other girls are doing a tv spot teaser for an upcoming gig and I'm stuck here at work! But I'll be leaving in an hour to go home and pile on make up and jewelry and fabric and blast the music all by myself. Getting dressed to dance at 10:30 in the morning just feels wrong...and getting dressed to dance all alone is not fun at all. And being by myself just makes the nerves even worse.

How do you guys combat the nerves? I normally need a few deep breaths, a cocktail if appropriate, and the rest of the girls to get all pumped up around me before I get into my zone.

a co worker is in a photography club and a guy in his club wants to photograph a belly dancer.

he asked me, I asked if I could bring other dancers...he's going to ask the guy if he would like a couple other dancers... any takers? the studio is in kettering and they're looking at doing Saturday 3/15...I'll let you know what I hear.

i'll probably also bring the man or my mom so that I'm not feeling vulnerable there in my costume.

I'm taking my kids to grandma and grandpa's to spend the night. We're going to check out the Afro-beat band. A friend of ours plays sax. I've never seen them, but heard a rehearsal last week and it sounded like fun dance music. They are playing at the Gypsy Hut, starts at 10pm. I'll be there shakin' it if anybody needs a place to be!!

Gettin' Crafty

I stopped by Michael's last night to pick up some yarn for scarves I'm making for co-workers... Anyway, while I was in there, I saw a display of beads that were new. I remembered an old black bra at home and thought that i'd buy some of the beads and try to make my own embellished belly dance bra.

So far it's turned out really well! I don't think I'm going to cover both cups entirely but I've beaded along the upper edge of the bra and attached this neat dangly thing from the center. I'll post pictures of what I have so far tonight. Then you can tell me if it's ugly or if I need to keep adding!

Oh and the beads are called Lost and Found. They're a mix between looking a bit gothic and antique. Mostly black and silver and gray with antique looking silver and gold accents.

coin bra...necessary or unnecessary?

Okay...I've been debating whether or not I should purchase a coin bra.

I've contemplated making one and then I nervous and think I should just buy...
However, since I perform like...oh never (okay, a little more than never) I'm also wondering is it worth it to make the investment, when at this point, I may only break it out like 3 times a year...

Thoughts?

I'm looking for inspiration/insight on how you folks solo. Personally, I'm not much of a solo dancer (my comfort zone is definitely cueing) and ALWAYS find myself stringing together moves and combos I've learned in class when it's time to dance solo. There's nothing wrong with that, but I'd like to add some variety into how I dance.

I think what I mean is that any time I'm dancing by myself, I'm basically dancing through cued moves that anyone from the troupe or class could jump up and follow. If you consider that type of solo, when placed in a line up of several group/duet/trio numbers, then it's not really that interesting is it? I'd basically be doing lots of overlapping moves that the whole troupe had done throughout the course of the show, just by myself. Like I'm cueing an improv and everyone else forgot to come on stage.

Again, I don't think there's a WRONG way to plan out solos, and the one I'm doing at the Holiday Hafla on Tuesday is just this type of choreo, but how do I make it interesting? I know the general rules of using your entire floor space and playing up different sections of your audience; I'm thinking more on the basic level of planning out the actual moves.

How do you all approach solos? Do you choreograph move by move? Do you just get out there and wing it? Do you start with a skeleton outline and then just get out there and wing it? Do you string together cued moves too? How do you make it look distinct: like a performance and not just like you drilling in your bedroom in front of the mirror? Do you count and precisely assemble every pop, lock, and undulation?

MODROM BELLY DANCE
Modrom is short for Modern Romani. The name reflects its true nature: a “gypsy” dance: a dance that absorbs elements from different forms, melding them together into a unique concoction that is completely its own nature. The name also reflects the emotionally charged aspect of the form, where musicality and theatrical delivery are as important as any other component of technique. It is foremost a blend of Egyptian raqs sharqi, Romani, and modern jazz dance. It is also flavored by Indian, Ballet, Spanish, and Turkish dance.

“I look to the Romani people as my inspiration. They incorporated little bits of what they loved from all the cultures they traveled through and then created something completely their own. We may not be Rom, but we can try to dance with as much passion, spirit, and fearlessness as they do. In this genre, we cobble together a completely individual and unique message. We expose our soul and gaze defiantly outward from our place of power. Under the stage lights, we escape our birth and are only what we create.” -Kitiera

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
This workshop will begin with technique and drills for Modrom. A short break down of music theory and musicality follows, and the day ends with combinations and choreography. Bring finger cymbals! You may wish to bring a yoga mat for the warm up. Dress to sweat! (yoga/ active wear is recommended) *also recommended to dress in layers that can be paired down as you get warmed up.

KITIERA
Raised in Lexington, KY, Kitiera's 15 year journey with Middle Eastern Dance has led her across the US. She was a popular performer and instructor in Seattle, WA before moving to Berkeley, CA in 2006 to study intensely at the Suhaila Salimpour School of Dance. She is currently certified level II in Suhaila's format, an instructor at the Salimpour studio, and a member of the Suhaila Dance Company and Bal Anat. On Chris' recommendation I stopped by Nu-Image yesterday wanted to give a report: they have a LOT of bellydance stuff! Lots of different colors and styles of coin scarves, beaded bras and matching skirts and harem pants, chiffon skirts, costume jewelry. Good prices, and they were willing to bargain.

They also have a lovely selection of gypsy skirts, "water pipes" and glass and clay "tobacco pipes", hemp jewelry, bumper stickers, rasta wear, and knockoff Louis Vuitton.

It's nice to have a place to get BD stuff that's so convenient, good find, Chris.

Are there any local Cincinnati stores that sell haram pants?

Are there any local Cincinnati stores that sell haram pants? As, I have been practicing more at home, my confidence in myself is growing and I am thinking more towards building my "bellydance" war-drobe. I have just finished practicing to a "Bellydance" DVD, and I have just spent sometime practicing Katy's choreography for the beginner's class for the "Hafla". I have also been practicing and working out the kinks for my own "Hafla" solo (which actually borrows more from ballet). As I find myself wanting to become more involved in "bellydance", I am not only wishing to fit in more, but also have fun decorating and expressing myself. I had never had the opportunity to allow myself to be this creative in ballet. The last time that walked into a ballet studio, the atmosphere was so cold, dry, and bland. I had actually been looking for some of the things that male "bellydancers" wear on-line, but I am finding that the female "bellydance" attire appears to be more accessible and possibly easier to wear, so I am thinking about purchasing a couple of chiffon skirts which might match either my purple hip scarf or my red one. I have already made that decision that I plan on investing more into my "bellydance" war drobe, one tax-time comes in January or February. I have seen some sharp looking "bellydance" accessories at "NU-IMAGE" at the Tri-County and Eastgate malls. I have also seen a very limited "bellydance" selection at "Diana's Dance and Fitness" in Blue Ash. Can anybody suggest some stores in the Cincinnati area, that I may not be aware of?

I did it!

I performed this afternoon at our company talent show and survived.

I couldn't imagine that that many people would show up, seeing as it's a Friday afternoon and well, I always have better things to do on a Friday afternoon. Like, think about how soon I can go home and stuff. :)

I got downstairs to that Masonette (our cafeteria/lounge) and there were so. many. people.

My costume turned out okay for not having much. My girlfriend here loaned me a beautiful jade necklace she made recently for a craft show we did. I have been secretly coveting it but alas, do not have the funds this month to buy. :( I wore my purple flare pants, my striped skirt, coin belt, melodia twist top with a tight black tank under it. I found a couple of pretty beaded cuffs stashed away in my jewelry box and a thick silver ring.

I got two standing ovations and my friends were sitting right in front of the stage hooting and hollering. I was in such a freak out mode while dancing that I finished and was like, "Um. Did I remember to do those lightning turns?" I did, but it went so fast I couldn't remember it! hahaha

I was invited to join one of the other contestant's band promptly after I finished. I have also heard that I distracted all the boys and flustered the emcee. People have been so kind and were very nice with the compliments. :) I know it wasn't stellar, but they have no clue. hahaha

Internal Media apparently filmed the show so if I have video, I'll try to post to YouTube and share.

When I was done my nerves were gone and I was like, "Let's go again!"

Voting starts Monday and if I place I get to dance again next Friday. :) heheh

feeling a little like a pirate

tuesday night before class i tried on what i think i will wear tomorrow for my talent show.

i think i looked like a pirate.

anyone else experience this phenomenon? maybe it's because everything i had on was black and gray and a red fringe scarf?
maybe i should wear purple pants instead of gray? maybe it was the fishnets on my arms?

any ideas?

Do you think anyone would laugh at me?

Hi everyone,

Katy has been really supportive of my idea to choreograph my own simple routine, for the "Holiday Hafla". In working up a routine, I strarted to get cold feet, and got discouraged as I strarted to fear being lauged at. The only times that I had ever danced for an audience, has been in "Jazz" or "Ballet". I wanted to create a "Bellydance" solo from a segment of a Madonna song. Katy had been supportive of the idea, but I realized that the particular song would be to difficult for me. I had changed my mind, but Katy sent me an encouraging e-mail. So, I have decided that I am going to use a one minute children's song, to keep with a holiday theme. The tempo of the song is slow, but I have been figuring out a way to simply incorporate some simple "bellydance" "hip-slides" and "Shoulder isolations" with some "Ballet" 2nd and 5th position plie's. I also have some very colorful and festive, but comfortable in mind to wear. I do kind of want people to laugh at me, but not in a derogitory way. I just want to do something creative and happy. I would like to hear some of your thoughts. See you in class.

i don't know if it's because i've been at this almost an hour and a half but I'm tapped for ideas...
i've already stolen some things katy did in the beginner class on tuesday and a little something something here and there from intermed...
sneaky, i know.

the song starts to get a little crazy after where I've stopped. anyone have Raquy and the Caveman?
The song is called "Very Short Bellydance Solo." The title had me at "Very Short." :)

If you're familiar with it, any brilliant ideas?

advice on a good solo routine

okay.
I get the differences between cabaret and ATS/TF/UT.... (I could probably add to that list forever) and why Cab lends itself more toward solo stuff and why Tribal looks so good in groups.

You all dance solo either at Andy's or other venues, so what are some things that make a good tribal solo?

Also, anyone dancing this weekend at Andy's? My husband announced yesterday, "I could use some Medeterranian food" and I suggested Andy's this weeked...

Help! I'm retarded with transitions

Last night, while we were doing the fast songs in groups, I found myself in the same place I usually find myself when we do these things...
I have no skill when it comes to transitioning from one move to another. I have some difficulty in slow songs, but not nearly as bad as when we're moving faster and I find myself in one move and know the next one I want to do but am going, "How the heck do I get out of this?"

Does this just come with time or are there some obvious things I can do to get out of repeating the same move 50 times?! :)

Also, do you ever stop feeling awkward? On some things i get so caught up in posture, etc that dancing feels awkward. I'm assuming this has got to be a time thing. And probably a practice thing?

I got in a little more than 30 minutes last night. I did a warm up and slow stuff because it was so close to bedtime. But hey, at least I did it!

I actually broke out the sword and drilled a bunch of slow stuff with it on my head. I tried to work on slow soloing with the sword, but I couldn't find the music I wanted and was totally uninspired. I guess that's a good exercise too: dancing to awful/annoying music.

I got good and warm and did a little floor work, and wow do my knees hate me today. I guess I need to start slow and build my thigh strength back up...we've not been doing much floor work at all in class lately. And we're doing tons of floor work for the performance at Kira's Oasis in October, so it looks like I've got my practice goal figured out - thigh & hamstring strength!

Maybe I do yoga and upper body stuff tonight? We'll see.

Looks like The Indigo will be doing a workshop weekend at Mecca in September, with 3-hour sessions with each of Mardi, Zoe, RB and Tobias. Plus what I'm sure will be a kickass show.

trying to dance at home...

Ok, so I practiced at home for the first time in a looooong time last night. I've just been feeling sort of muddy and sluggish with the fundamentals for awhile and decided to work on it last night. Not at all sure how often I'll actually make myself dance at home, but ANY amount of practice can't hurt!

I stretched, drilled, and stretched some more for about 80 minutes total. Didn't feel like driving to the gym in the rain for an ass whipping, so I tried to do it myself!

Drilling definitely didn't get me as sweaty as when we cue nonstop to that 20+ minute song in class, but I was working it.

Here's what I did:
head slides and circles
chest slides and circles
hip slides and circles
hip ups
belly rolls
hip downs
Arabic
snake arms
figure 8s and Mayas
hip shimmy
3/4 shimmy
shoulder shimmy
streeeeeetching
splits...stupid Can Can

The concentration was intense. Standing in one place and drilling forever kinda made my knees hurt, so every once in awhile I made sure to move with each drill I was working on. It occurs to me now that I forgot lifts and drops. Oh well! You can't do it all all the time!

What do you guys do at home? Drills? Practice cueing? Work on old choreos? How often do you dance?

What if we made this tribe a place to motivate each other to work more on our own?

Was it an awesome performance at some festival that inspired you to start?

Did you have a friend who did it?

Was it childhood fantasies of harem girls in sparkly clothes?

I found a video at Wal-Mart when I was in college called "Belly Dance Basic Moves for Beginners" with Veena and Neena. I used to do it in my dorm room. And then when I moved to Cincinnati I searched the yellow pages for a belly dance class to get me moving and meeting new people. And it just so happened that Anaya Gypsy's dance classes fit into my schedule.

And with no idea what Tribal was or any awareness about styles, I went to see what it was like. I was hooked from my first class, and the first time I saw the performance troupe practicing for a show I said, "I'm going to do that." And now you know...the rest of the story!

Summerfair, June 2nd

Anaya Gypsy is dancing at Coney Island's Moonlight Gardens from 4:00 to 4:30 Saturday TOMORROW as part of the Summerfair arts festival. There will be an Urban Tribal style choreography, group improv, sultry slow moves, frenetic Tahitian, swirling poi, mystifying hoop, and some seriously loud freakin' zilling.

The Lovely Lady Linnet and the 'Mazing Miss Moe will be dancing with Habeeba's Mirage on Sunday at 1:00 as well.

Totally bummed that the Rachel Brice workshops sold out? Disgusted by the cringe-worthy thought of the miles long waiting list? You don't have to sit on your couch all alone that weekend! There's something fun going on in Dayton that you might like to try!

Michelle L'amour from Chicago is coming back to teach a Burlesque workshop and give us a show with some of her dancers from her troupe: Star & Garter Burlesque!
Workshop is only open to women 18+ and you may be asked for your ID if you try to attend. If you are 18 or older, you may contact Kira for the Username and Password required to enter the page with all the details, but here are the basics:
WHEN: Saturday, March 31st
Workshop Time: 12:00 Noon - 4:00 pm...ish
$50 per person - women only 18+
Show Time: 7pm - 9pm
$15.00 per person - 18+ only, open to the public!

These workshops are tons of fun and very laid back, and the shows are sizzling hot! And a certain bunch of local tribal dancers will be performing a burlesque act under the name Booby Trap Love Stuff (it's a long drawn out inside joke). Fine Arts Fund Sampler Weekend

It's the time again for the Fine Arts Fund Sampler Weekend. Anaya Gypsy Dance Company is proud once again to give a FREE performance on Saturday, February 10 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in the Black Box Theatre of the Contemporary Arts Center downtown. Another FREE performance will be held Sunday, February 11 from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. at Blue Ash Shaolin-do (our home studio) off Reed Hartman Highway.

The Sampler Weekend is Cincinnati's largest free arts festival, with many different activities taking place in various locations all across the city. I guarantee there's something cool happening in your neighborhood. Cincinnati DOES have a vibrant, thriving arts culture, and there ARE people who care about it. Please take this chance to visit a gallery, go to a concert, watch a dance performance, take in a show at a theatre...for FREE. If the high cost of cover charges, ticket prices, and admission fees has held you back, there's no excuse this weekend. Many activities are kid friendly and include hands on craft sessions or crowd participation, so don't let the kiddies stop you either.

Katy's UT routine ????s

Hi girls!!
Please help me!
I have found it impossible to practice the UT routine at home b/c I can't remember the order of the steps, so
I'm writing them down,
but I'm still struggling...........
What does it go to after the 'soho drops, umi around'?
I'm sure if I find out what is next I'll figure out more of the sequence.
So far I have:
INTRO
Morroccan variation x2
Algerian shimmy variation
'Soho' drops (4 up, 4 down, umi around, repeat)
I keep changing my mind about which move is next.
I need to figure it out, so I can practice at home.

Sword shopping

I'm wantin' to buy me a sword....ready to play 'test my balance' some more.
I was wondering if anyone had any favorites or suggestions before I made my purchase. I was told the Suhaila dance co. uses turquoise. There's seemed nice and affordable.
What do you think? I want to really like my sword.
